Safer Stations

The Evening Standard launched its Safer Stations Campaign after the murder of lawyer Tom ap Rhys Pryce, who was killed by robbers after he left an unmanned station late at night. The campaign revealed the extent to which commuters are put in danger after dark, with 229 stations left unmanned, and ministers acknowledged that many passengers felt unsafe. In the wake of the campaign a series of operators have improved security.

Both Silverlink and Chiltern Railways have increased manning at their stations, while other operators have funded more British Transport Police officers, added extra security patrols and paid for new CCTV systems. Since the improvements, crime at stations has come down and complaints about people feeling unsafe have also fallen. But there remains much to be done - scores of stations are still unmanned, despite profits going up across the rail network.
