Population

Since 1989 London’s population has been steadily growing, standing at more than 7.5 million people in 2007. By the year 2016 it is estimated that the city’s population will be in excess of 8.1 million.

As well as London’s increasing population, there will also be change in terms of age, structure and ethnicity, by 2016 the city’s working population will grow by 516,000 – and of these 80% will be from ethnic minority communities.

The diversity of London’s population offers opportunities for the capital’s future economic development, namely:

  • The ability to attract and retain talent from across the world
  • An international cultural offering - for example in arts and entertainment
  • Cultural diversity enhancing business creativity and innovation.
  • International trade and investment from overseas which strengthens London’s link with the rapidly growing economies in Asia.
