The Evening Standard has capped an unprecedented year of recognition and achievement by being named Daily Newspaper of the Year.

The London Press Club award, one of the most prestigious in British journalism, was presented by the Duchess of Cornwall to Editor Geordie Greig. The Club’s president, Professor Donald Trelford, said the Standard had won because it "has shown the most outstanding improvement during the year after years of financial doom and gloom."

He added: "It achieved this by a bold commercial step in becoming a free paper and by showing great editorial confidence with a series of exclusives and campaigns."

These are the latest in a series of awards for The Evening Standard.


The London Evening Standard's Dispossessed campaign scooped two major honours at the British Press Awards - the newspaper industry's equivalent of the Oscars.

Our series of articles highlighting poverty in London was named Campaign of the Year and also won the Cudlipp Award for outstanding popular journalism.

Winner of Media Brand of the Year and Grand Prix Award at the Media Week Awards 2010 and Medium of the Year 2010 voted by Campaign
